Three Things We Know About This Election

There’s been a palpable shift in energy with the Harris/Walz ticket and we’ve harnessed that energy by moving thousands of new white folks into our programs—phone banking, canvassing, and bringing their community into the work through mass meetings across the country.

As we ride this wave of public support, we know these three things remain true:

  1. This election is not a done deal– it will be decided by thin margins in a few key locations and much more work is required to stop Trump.
  2. White nationalist backlash is coming. And white people must be ready to mobilize to protect election results and reject racism and white Christian nationalism.
  3. This work is bigger than this election cycle. This year’s election is one extremely important chess move in a much longer game of fighting for racial and housing justice, real climate solutions, a ceasefire in Gaza and Palestinian liberation, and more. We need millions of folks in it for the long haul.

These tasks aren’t small, but the good news is that in the midst of the shifting winds of the last few weeks, people are ready to do something. And we have a plan to accomplish all three of these tasks.

To pull off these plans and take advantage of this moment, SURJ is training our folks to host in-person “mass meetings” across the country. These meetings range from a small gathering of close friends to a big community event. You’ll be trained to hold space for powerful conversations about politics, racism, and how white people can make a difference. And you’ll deepen community connections to be able to show up in the election– and whatever comes in the days following it.

Our mass meeting info session is TOMORROW at 8 ET. Can you join us?

If you’ve ever hosted a book club or birthday party, you can host a mass meeting. We have materials and training, and every host will receive support from a coach and a cohort of other hosts who are hosting meetings across the country from a small town in rural New York to Denver.

These meetings are a chance to gather your people, process what’s going on in the world, and commit to action. At SURJ, we believe that it is white people’s work to organize other white people in our own lives– and hosting a mass meeting in your community is a way to do that.
