Kentucky People’s Union Organizer
Full Time, Boyd County, KY, $50,000
SURJ is seeking a Kentucky People’s Union (KPU) Organizer to support our grassroots organizing efforts in Appalachia. The SURJ Kentucky People’s Union Organizer works closely with the Appalachian People’s Union (APU) Director leading SURJ’s work in rural North Eastern Kentucky engaging with working class Kentuckians in and near Boyd County on material issue shared interest campaigns in their area and electoral possibilities. A successful person in this role will sustain and grow the organizing work that KPU began in the area in 2022, by continuing to build, grow, and lead a base of support in the area that contributes to long-term power building for poor and working-class people and SURJ’s electoral priorities.
SURJ is seeking a Communications Director to drive SURJ’s narrative strategy and strategic communications work across our campaigns to a wide array of various audiences. Our ideal Communications Director is an effective leader who brings a visionary, creative, and rigorous approach to advancing SURJ’s critical mission at this time in the world. This person should be able to execute and not just direct the work, make difficult and strategic decisions in high pressure situations, and balance multiple and competing interests. They will provide oversight of and leadership to the communications department, who will implement much of the work.

The Human Resources Generalist will support SURJ’s growing staff and the Human Resources Team by providing a broad range of HR functions including recruitment, hiring and onboarding support, payroll and benefits tracking, compliance monitoring, policy research and systems administration. A successful person in this role will be an engaging people person who is detail oriented, thrives on organization, has the ability to work independently and take direction, and can work as part of a team. They need to have a solid understanding of human resources fundamentals, compliance and confidentiality.
Tennessee Rural Community Organizer
Full Time, Tennessee, $50,000
SURJ is seeking a Tennessee Rural Community Organizer to recruit new people and cultivate the leadership of low-income and working class residents/renters in small cities and rural Tennessee to build a statewide tenants network. That can include local campaigns, statewide campaigns, and support to build tenant unions both city wide and in individual complexes. A successful person in this role will build a powerful membership base, identify issues and campaigns that resonate locally and have impact, and support members in running housing campaigns that impact their lives through base building of impacted tenants in strategic areas in Tennessee, but especially rural small towns and cities. The organizer will support work as needed to connect our bases into state-wide efforts to shift power and build cross-race solidarity to win on issues that impact their lives.
Georgia Deep Canvasser
Part Time, Temporary, Central to Northern Georgia, $30 an hour
SURJ is seeking a canvasser to go door to door to talk to residents of rural Georgia, within 2.5 hours of Atlanta, using deep canvassing techniques to have high-quality conversations. This is non-partisan work; we will not be canvassing for any candidate or party. A successful person in this role will have some previous canvassing experience and be excited about having long-form conversations with residents on the door and contributing critical research to the larger conversations. Our canvassers will be engaging in Deep Canvassing, which involves making real, human connections with residents through shared experience that establishes mutual trust.

National Membership Organizer

SURJ is seeking a National Membership Organizer to lead the enrollment, management, and solicitation of hundreds of thousands of SURJ supporters and members. This position is accountable for leading a national membership program that supports fulfilling goals for SURJ’s development, communications, and national organizing departments. A successful person in this role will have experience with rigorous grassroots fundraising, direct voter or member contact, list segmentation, data management, moving supporters through an engagement funnel, grassroots fundraising, direct voter or member contact, and copywriting for fundraising appeals.
Development Administrative Assistant
Full Time, Remote, $60,000
SURJ is seeking an experienced, reliable and detail-oriented Development Administrative Assistant to support SURJ’s Director of Impact (DOI) and the development team. They will support the DOI as they guide the organization through a time of rapid and extensive growth with ambitious fundraising goals. A successful person in this role will become a trusted extension of the DOI in many ways, providing real-time support and proactively anticipating their needs as well as the needs of the development team and the broader organization. They will be highly organized, be able to take direction and execute impact, be a strong communicator, and be the “calm in a storm”. They will also have strong project management skills, be relatable, and be able to stay organized amidst shifting priorities and conditions.
Digital Content Strategist

SURJ is seeking a Digital Content Strategist to sharpen our digital strategies to bring millions of white people into alignment with movements for justice and polarize them away from the far Right. This position will drive our social media strategy across SURJ’s various audiences and organizing projects– from local projects in the rural South to our national electoral work– to work towards our organizational goals. Our ideal candidate is someone who is passionate about stopping an authoritarian takeover of the federal government in 2024, and building a base to win real change beyond. We are looking for someone who tracks both the news cycle and internet trends with an excitement to take risks and experiment with creative tactics for engagement and narrative change.
