Deputy Director, National Organizing Department

Full Time, Remote, $80,000

SURJ is seeking a Deputy Director to support the work of the National Organizing Department (NOD) by driving the execution of the department’s organizing plans, supervising staff including some program managers and team leads, and ensuring department-wide systems are operating smoothly so as to maximize external impact. A successful person in this role will bring a resourced and grounded commitment to base building and organizing white people at scale, a genuine interest in working hands-on with a talented staff of organizers, and a systems approach to project managing big plans. They will be a skilled and experienced organizing practitioner who can function independently and who has experience running projects or campaigns that integrate and balance leadership development, campaign strategy, and winning change.

Administrative Project Manager

Full Time, Remote, $67,500

SURJ is seeking an experienced, reliable and detail-oriented Administrative Project Manager (APM) to support SURJ’s Assistant Director and Managing Director. This person will support the Directors as they guide the organization through a time of rapid-paced work and extensive growth. This will be a sibling position to the Administrative Project Manager who supports the Executive Director. A successful person in this role will become a trusted extension of the Assistant Director and Managing Director in many ways, providing real-time support and proactively anticipating their organizational needs. They will be highly organized, a strong communicator, and the “calm in a storm”. The APM organizes and coordinates the Assistant Director and Managing Directors’ meeting schedules, facilitates workflow and tasks lists, manages travel plans, and carries out other administrative support responsibilities.

External Media Specialist

SURJ is seeking an External Media Specialist to support the work of the Communications Department by driving the implementation of the organization’s earned media and press relations program. Our ideal candidate will bring strong communications chops working with diverse audiences in a political/movement context and a detailed and relational orientation to communication tasks.

Appalachian People’s Union Distributed Organizer

Full Time, Remote, $67,500

SURJ is seeking an APU Distributed Organizer to create a distributed infrastructure to recruit and train a large base of members who can win campaigns in Kentucky and Appalachia. This will include developing a program to scale our Southern work through mass absorption, online to offline recruitment techniques, social media and cultural ways to bring people in. This work also includes using a set of skills, technology, mass trainings, and developing plans with local organizers to build a broader distributed organizing program. Specifically, the Distributed Organizer will grow and maintain infrastructure to cast a wide net and create the systems and infrastructure needed for organizers on the ground to absorb new people, while also creating new campaigns across the state by developing leaders to organize where they live. This includes creating online meeting spaces, managing data integration, and running phone and text banks with local organizers.

Grants and Foundations Manager

Full Time, Remote, $85,000

SURJ is seeking a Grants and Foundation Manager to support all institutional giving at SURJ, ranging from prospecting, proposal writing, submissions, reporting, and general grants management. A successful person in this role will have exceptional writing skills and enjoy managing a large portfolio of institutional funders ranging from large multi-year investments ($500,000 and above) to smaller one-time grant opportunities ($5,000 – $25,000). SURJ Development encompasses a holistic approach to cultivating engagement, participation and financial support for the work and mission of SURJ. We combine political education, organizing, and leadership development to grow donors’ investment in the essential work of SURJ and the broader movement for racial
justice and dismantling white supremacy.

Chapter Network Coordinator

Full Time, Remote, $65,000

SURJ is seeking a Chapter Network Coordinator in our National Organizing Department (NOD) to support SURJ chapters in improving chapter practices to be in alignment with SURJ National practices including our approach to organizing, how we discuss our strategy and campaign work, and our security and legal compliance practices. A successful person in this role, as well as every organizer within NOD, is expected to carry out recruitment, leadership development of members, and design and execute organizing programs aligned with SURJ’s national strategy.

Appalachian Peoples Union Director

Full Time, Remote, $85,000

Drawing on the deep history of Appalachian freedom fighters, Appalachian People’s Union (APU) brings working white Appalachian people into local community campaigns fighting for justice in the Appalachian region of the South. The Director is responsible for being a lead strategist focused on working class, majority white, rural Appalachian Kentucky communities. This position will supervise organizing staff and ensure coordination between other SURJ projects working in Appalachian states. The Appalachian Organizing Director will also hold key relationships in the region, particularly with key organizing partners who are aligned with SURJ.

Senior Donor Organizer

Full Time, Remote, $90,000

SURJ is proud that the majority of our funding comes from individual donors. The Senior Donor Organizer will work closely with the Director of Impact, the Deputy Development Director, the SURJ Board, the Impact Team, and SURJ organizers to build out a donor community and increase the number and size of major gift contributions ranging from $10,000 to $50,000, including holding some relationships who contribute more. This role will also work with the Deputy Development Director, the Impact Team, and organizers to build systems that effectively steward donor relationships at all levels.This position includes domestic travel 15-25% of the Time. SURJ is aiming to build a distributed culture of fundraising, which means that this position will be focused not just on raising money directly, but will also work with a broad group of individuals to build fundraising skills and make asks.
