Why class matters

Centering Class: The deep connections between racial and economic justice

We know that those at the top use racism to divide poor and working people while they maintain power and profit. Showing Up for Racial Justice’s work is about supporting more and more poor and working class white people link up with communities of color fighting for the things we all need to thrive.

SURJ is organizing to win policy changes and greater investment in meeting the needs of poor and working people – such as housing, healthcare, and more at local, state and federal level. We are working to grow the leadership and base of poor and working class white people in prioritized states who are active in, run, and contribute to campaigns to shift power from the Right wing, and win investment in poor and working people and communities.

We work to expand the number of poor white people who see their mutual interest in ending racism and white supremacy–who are clear that those at the top use racism to divide us in order to maintain power and wealth for a few. And we support middle and owning class people to more deeply understand the connections between racial and economic justice and show up in fights to help win concrete change.
