In a time when racist, authoritarian rule fueled by billionaires is sweeping the nation, Zohran Mamdani’s win in the New York City Democratic primary was a sign of hope for our movements. Running on a working class, anti-racist agenda, his platform centers making New York City more affordable and fights for trans rights, Palestinian liberation, and against anti-Semitism.
SURJ was proud to endorse Zohran in the primary– and now we’re getting in formation to make sure he’s elected this November! Did you cheer Zohran on from afar and feel moved by his historic victory and powerful platform? Now is your chance to pitch in and make sure white people join the multiracial coalition of voters that won him the primary.
We’ll be running phonebanks from now until election day– and the first one is this Saturday, August 23 at 1 PM ET / 12 PM CT / 11 AM MT /10 AM PT. Can you join us?
Zohran won this spring because of decades of organizing in NYC by SURJ and our partner organizations– from JVP’s historic mobilizations over the last two years to CAAAV and DRUM’s base building in working class immigrant communities to DSA’s sharp strategy (and Zohran’s political home!). Alongside our partners, our New York City chapter turned out their members to join the historic 40,000 volunteers who delivered Zohran’s win.
In the general election, we’ll be using our powerful national phone banks to make hundreds of thousands of calls and do what SURJ does best: reach white working class voters the campaign isn’t contacting – people who Cuomo is investing in and who could go either way– and engaging them to reject the racist lies of the billionaires and choose to stand with the multiracial working class.
But this is bigger than New York. Zohran’s win showed us that truly progressive candidates can take on our issues head-on while speaking to the material needs of working people–and beat billionaire-funded corporate Democrats. This win would strike a massive blow to the billionaire class in the largest city in America– and would be a win for all of us.
Whether you got out the vote for Zohran in New York City or celebrated from afar, his victory showed everyone across the country that we can win big when candidates are bold and unapologetic about economic issues and racial justice. A multiracial coalition won Zohran’s campaign, and that’s what it will take to win again.
